Mesozoic Protocol is a single-player tower defense game set on PC in which dinosaurs adapt and evolve in response to the player's defenses. The core premise places the player in charge of an emergency containment protocol after a failed research experiment allows genetically engineered dinosaurs to escape and merge with machinery. The goal is to hold back escalating hordes long enough for scientists to reverse the breach, using a mix of static towers and a controllable mech to manage waves across varied terrain.
Gameplay
The central loop revolves around building and upgrading defenses while responding to enemy adaptation. Dinosaurs gain resistance to frequently used damage types after outpost 12, forcing players to diversify their approach rather than relying on a single strong tower. Seven buildable tower types Pulse, Chain, Cryo, Mortar, Flame, Hive, and Barracks work alongside the armed headquarters as the eighth defensive element. Each tower type deals distinct damage that dinosaurs can partially resist, so effective play requires spreading damage sources and discovering combinations that counter evolving threats.
Mech pilots add an active layer to the otherwise static genre. One pilot starts unlocked, with three more obtained by collecting bolts. Each pilot brings four abilities that improve with experience, allowing the mech to complement tower placements through targeted strikes or support effects. A persistent meta progression system lets players spend stars earned from completed levels on permanent upgrades to towers and the headquarters. These upgrades can be reassigned between attempts, supporting experimentation across different strategies.
Thirty hand-designed outposts span multiple biomes, each presenting unique layouts that influence tower placement and wave routing. Dinosaurs move in herds that can overwhelm positions if containment fails, and scattered easter eggs reward exploration within the outposts.
Game Modes
Four difficulty tiers range from Easy, which functions as an accessible introduction, to Extinction, where even well-prepared setups face severe pressure. Additional modifiers expand replayability on any outpost. Breach mode removes access to certain towers and alters wave composition to include more and heavier dinosaurs earlier. Containment mode restricts the player to a single life, a fixed loadout, and no tower selling, turning each attempt into a high-stakes test of planning.
Endless mode provides an open-ended challenge that scales indefinitely, allowing continued refinement of strategies until the dinosaurs eventually overpower any defense. Boss waves appear at key points and demand precise timing and positioning, with higher difficulties making some encounters feel barely manageable. Up to five stars are available per level, and all can be earned through strong performance across the different modes and difficulties.
Progression and Challenges
Stars collected from outposts feed into a meta tree that permanently strengthens towers and the headquarters. This system encourages repeated play on favorite levels with different modifiers to gather resources for upgrades. The adaptation mechanic ensures that success on one run does not guarantee the same results on subsequent attempts, as dinosaurs shift their resistances based on prior encounters.
Players must balance immediate wave survival with long-term resource management, deciding when to invest in upgrades versus pushing forward to new outposts. The solo-developed nature of the project emphasizes focused mechanics over expansive features, resulting in a tight loop centered on adaptation and defensive variety.
Is It Worth Playing?
Mesozoic Protocol targets players who enjoy tower defense games with meaningful enemy adaptation and high difficulty options. The combination of evolving threats, multiple tower types, mech abilities, and layered modifiers creates substantial replay value within the thirty-outpost campaign. Those who prefer static defenses or lower-stakes experiences may find the Extinction and Containment challenges punishing, while fans of adaptive strategy will appreciate the constant need to adjust loadouts and placements.
The game is scheduled to enter Early Access in Q1 2027 with the full campaign already playable in its current form. As a single-developer project, it offers a focused experience built around the core idea of dinosaurs that actively push back against player strategies. Prospective buyers should consider whether they enjoy challenging, replay-heavy tower defense before committing, given the emphasis on difficult tiers and modifiers from the outset.
