MAINLINE is an action indie roguelite first-person shooter set on PC. Players control caffeine injected into a human body on the verge of collapse, racing through the bloodstream to reach the brain and wake the person before metabolism ends the run.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around constant forward momentum and an ever-draining survival timer. Movement never stops, forcing players to strafe along vessel walls while dodging incoming fire and clots. Kills extend the timer, and chaining them builds speed, widens the view, and stretches speed lines across the screen. Taking damage accelerates the drain further, with only the closing vignette and rising heartbeat as visual cues for remaining time.
Every enemy features an internal weak point. Striking it through that spot fully reloads the magazine. Stages progress through six chapters that follow the path from peripheral vein through the heart, lungs, aorta, blood-brain barrier, and finally the brain itself. Chapter colors shift from dark venous red to the electric tones of nerves. Adenosine receptors, platelet walls, and clot lasers act as environmental hazards that block or redirect shots.
At the end of each chapter a mutant boss guards the gate to the next organ. Defeat sends the run forward, while failure restarts only that chapter and clears all accumulated upgrades and the current weapon.
Game Modes
The game operates as a single-player roguelite experience built around repeated runs through the six-chapter sequence. Each attempt begins fresh with one gun and builds power through card choices after clearing stages. Three cards appear at each checkpoint, allowing a swap to a new weapon or upgrades to the one already equipped. Only one gun is carried at a time, yet upgrades to magazine size, damage, fire rate, and reload persist across switches.
Runs emphasize speed and aggression. The faster the kill chain, the greater the boost stacks. Reaching the brain triggers victory through a final burst, while any death before that point simply ends the attempt without further progress.
Weapons and Progression
Main weapons include the Adenosine Assault, Helix Shotgun, Platelet SMG, Axon Laser, and Triple-Dose Rifle. Special weapons add the Caffeine Bomb, Adrenaline Laser, Bradycardia, Caffeine Rush, and Platelet Shield. Upgrades stack permanently on the carried gun even after a switch, encouraging experimentation across runs.
Card selections after each stage provide the only branching choices. The system keeps every run distinct through weapon variety and layered stat improvements that compound over time.
Is It Worth Playing?
MAINLINE suits players who enjoy high-tension roguelite FPS gameplay centered on uninterrupted movement and kill chaining. The absence of on-screen timers or health bars creates constant pressure that rewards precise aiming and aggressive positioning. Short chapter restarts keep sessions focused, while the weapon and upgrade system offers meaningful variety without overwhelming complexity.
The title is especially relevant for those drawn to body-themed settings and fast, adrenaline-driven runs. Its flashing lights, strobing effects, and sudden color inversions require caution from anyone with photosensitive epilepsy. As a newly available PC release, the experience stands on its core loop of speed, survival, and progression through the circulatory system.
