Caçarola is an action indie RPG adventure game set in Early Access on PC. Players step into the role of a hunter in a brigade tasked with tracking and cooking legendary beasts that escaped after the Glutton King fell. The world features pepper fields overrun by a Sausage Boar, coastal areas dominated by a Paella Crab, and canyons where a Churro Anteater traps travelers with hot chocolate. The core loop combines boss fights against these creatures with kitchen preparation and village service demands.
Gameplay
Each beast functions as a distinct boss encounter with predictable attack patterns and environmental hazards. Hunters dodge fire from the Pepper Serpent, battle the Paella Crab amid rising tides, and navigate steam from the Bao Toad. Combat involves breaking tusks, claws, and shells while rescuing allies from traps like claws or hot chocolate. After defeating a beast, players return the meat to a shared kitchen where chopping, seasoning, roasting, and throwing food across stations keeps up with villager orders. A dog may interfere by running off with sausages, adding chaos to the workflow. Every hunter specializes in one kitchen station, requiring the full brigade to coordinate movements for efficiency. The first time a hunter consumes a beast, they acquire one of two techniques drawn from its abilities, such as the boar's charge or the serpent's fire. Builds develop by selecting three techniques per hunter from those learned across hunts. After each feast, the brigade votes on the most exaggerated story of the encounter. The chosen tale spreads through the village, causing the defeated beast to return in a larger, stronger form that yields greater rewards.
The game features hand-drawn visuals in the style of Brazilian cordel woodcut prints paired with a forró soundtrack. Progression spans multiple regions starting in the sun-baked Pepper Tree Valley and extending to the Saffron Coast, Steam Swamp, and Chili Canyon. Each area introduces new beasts, dishes, kitchen stations, and music tracks, with additional content planned during Early Access.
Game Modes
Caçarola supports solo play with three AI companions. Local multiplayer allows two to four players on a single screen. Online co-op supports up to four players. Controls work with keyboard and mouse or a controller. The listed hunters include Tonhão with his skewer-spear, Bento the butcher, Nara the archer, Tuca the little cook, Brígida with her cutting-board shield, Seu Galdino and his churrasco sword, Vó Quitéria with her giant wooden spoon, and Pipoca the tiny spice thief. One hunter occupies each kitchen station during service.
Exploration and Progression
Travel across the Glutton King's former kingdom reveals new environments and threats. Regions differ in beasts, recipes, and station mechanics while maintaining the cycle of hunt, cook, and story voting. Early Access brings further regions, beasts, and stations over time. The technique system encourages experimentation as players combine abilities stolen from multiple creatures into unique three-slot builds for each hunter.
Is It Worth Playing?
Caçarola suits players who enjoy cooperative action RPGs that blend boss combat with resource management and light party coordination. The beast-hunting loop, technique acquisition, and kitchen service create a repeatable cycle that rewards teamwork and adaptation. Local and online co-op options expand the experience for groups, while solo play with AI companions provides an accessible entry point. As an Early Access title, the game continues to receive new regions, beasts, and stations. Those drawn to distinctive art styles and rhythmic soundtracks alongside straightforward yet layered mechanics may find the current build engaging, particularly if they appreciate games that evolve through player-driven stories and escalating challenges.
