Swornhand is a strategy indie game built around turn-based card duels and deckbuilding in a dark fantasy setting. Players place cards on a grid, compare values on adjacent sides, and capture spaces to control the board. One card carries four sides, and each placement can shift the entire match through careful positioning and rule interactions.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on placing cards and reading the board state. Every empty space becomes a potential opening for the opponent, so decisions about where to play matter as much as the card chosen. Cards have values on all four sides, and players protect weaker edges while setting up chains of captures. Special rules such as Fallen Ace, Resonance, Convergence, and Elemental alter how values resolve and how duels progress across multiple turns.
Positioning creates layered tactics. A card played in the right spot can flip multiple neighboring positions at once, while leaving gaps invites counterplay. The system rewards foresight and adaptation rather than raw power, as weaker cards can still secure key areas when placed strategically.
Game Modes
Swornhand supports both single-player progression and head-to-head matches. The campaign sends players through 24 rivals spread across four domains, with story moments delivered by Jonas the Sentinel. Eight tactical challenges test board-reading skills in focused scenarios, while a five-duel tournament allows temporary addition of an opposing card after each victory.
Local play lets two players share one computer, with hands hidden during turn changes. Online multiplayer is planned for launch, enabling deck-based duels against remote opponents. Both the standard 3x3 board and the larger 4x4 Sanctuary support these formats, giving players different scales of strategy to master.
Boards and Arenas
The 3x3 board uses five cards per player and emphasizes tight control over every space. The 4x4 Sanctuary expands options to eight cards per player and sixteen positions, opening room for broader setups and longer-term planning. Four distinct 3x3 arenas further modify tactics: the Hall of Runes strengthens one side of a card, the Citadel of the Moon rotates values, the Forge of the Abyss empowers the central Heart position, and the Crypt of Frost provides temporary protection on frozen spaces.
These arena rules force players to adjust deck construction and placement priorities before each duel begins.
Deckbuilding and Content
Players build decks from 480 illustrated cards across six rarities. Each card includes creature artwork and flavor text that ties into the world of the Oath. Three five-card decks can be saved alongside one eight-card Sworn Deck for Sanctuary matches. A twelve-lesson tutorial guides new players from basic placement through advanced Sanctuary tactics, while ten difficulty levels scale the challenge for solo practice.
Is It Worth Playing?
Swornhand targets players who enjoy deliberate, positional card games with deckbuilding depth. The combination of side-value comparisons, capture mechanics, and arena-specific rules creates a focused tactical experience distinct from faster-paced alternatives. Local multiplayer and the planned online component add replay value for those who prefer direct competition, while the campaign and challenges provide structured single-player content. Those drawn to dark fantasy themes and grid-based strategy will find the systems rewarding once the placement logic clicks. Because the game remains in development with launch features still pending, interested players can follow its progress and decide closer to release based on final balance and online implementation.
