Machi Gurashi is a simulation game built around observation and subtle direction in an anime-styled town setting. Players watch a group of independent characters navigate daily life over a fixed period of 100 days, with no controllable protagonist or avatar of their own. The experience unfolds through visual novel style presentations where characters act on their own personalities, interests, and relationships.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on spectating events and making limited interventions. Each day offers one opportunity to influence a single character through a selection of options that can shift their behavior or interactions. Notifications keep track of developments involving characters outside direct view, allowing the simulation to progress across multiple locations at once. These locations range from everyday spots like an office building and clothing store to more specific sites such as a mixed-sex bathhouse and open terrain areas.
Character creation provides extensive customization before towns are generated. Options cover personality traits, interests, outfits, sexuality, pronouns, and other details. Up to 32 characters can populate a single town, drawing from nine presets where six return from the earlier title Daigaku Gurashi. Personality traits mix freely and include options like Envious, Weirdo, Cringe, Tsuntsun, Shutterbug, Pickpocket, Expressionless, Vegetarian, Masochist, Introvert, and Slob. Over 400 short voice clips add audio layers to character actions and reactions.
Settings adjust the experience further with choices between yen or dollars as currency, different starting money amounts, and either a 12-hour or 24-hour clock. The game presents all events without written dialogue, relying instead on visual sequences and the voice clips for expression.
Game Modes
The primary experience is a single continuous simulation run lasting 100 in-game days. No separate named modes exist beyond this core spectator format. Towns generate with the chosen characters and settings, and the simulation runs forward with characters making autonomous decisions. Influence actions serve as the only player input each day, guiding the overall narrative direction without direct control over any individual.
Character Interactions and Town Dynamics
Characters operate independently and form relationships or conflicts based on their traits and circumstances. The system tracks events across the town even when the player focuses on one area, delivering updates through notifications. This creates emergent stories from the mix of preset and custom characters. Locations support varied activities, and the adult-oriented content includes nudity and sexual elements, with all characters confirmed as 20 years or older.
Is It Worth Playing?
Machi Gurashi suits players interested in hands-off social simulation and character-driven stories without a traditional protagonist. The emphasis on customization and independent NPC behavior delivers replay value through different town compositions and influence choices. Those seeking direct control or action-focused gameplay will find the spectator structure limiting. The adult themes and lack of written dialogue define its niche appeal for audiences comfortable with visual novel presentation and mature content. Availability is limited to PC, and the game stands as a self-contained experience built on the foundation of its predecessor.
