PROJECT ZIRCON is a strategy game that blends dark fantasy themes with deckbuilding roguelike elements on PC. Players assume the role of a nation's ruler tasked with guiding their people through five in-game years while fending off the return of the Calamity Dragon of the Abyss. Each year requires meeting specific targets, or the world faces consumption by the dragon. Success in the Normal Route comes from defeating the Calamity Dragon of the Abyss in Year 5, though choices and events open paths to other conclusions.
Gameplay
The core loop divides each year into an Admin Phase and a Strategy Phase. In the Strategy Phase, players expand territory and collect Character Cards along with Facilities using three distinct resource types: Commerce Points, Industry Points, and Culture Points. These resources support different objectives, so allocation demands attention to immediate needs and long-term plans. Character Cards and Facilities combine in varied ways to form adaptable decks suited to shifting conditions.
The Admin Phase focuses on deploying acquired Character Cards. Each card carries a Rank and Type that influence outcomes when paired with Facilities. Strong combinations yield greater rewards. Players may equip up to three zirpowers in the deck to introduce specialized advantages during play. Seasons progress naturally across the five years, and failure to hit yearly targets ends the attempt.
Player Level rises with continued play, granting access to new Facilities and additional starting decks. This progression encourages repeated runs as the world responds to prior decisions and unexpected events.
Game Modes
PROJECT ZIRCON centers on a single-player campaign structured around five years of nation management. The Normal Route requires raising Military Points to confront the Calamity Dragon of the Abyss by Year 5. Multiple endings exist, and branching story paths arise from encountered events and player choices. Some routes demand objectives beyond standard military buildup, shifting focus depending on the decisions made.
Progression through Player Level unlocks further content for subsequent attempts, allowing adaptation to new starting conditions and Facilities. The structure supports varied strategies across runs without altering the fundamental yearly cycle of preparation and administration.
Nation Building and Deck Construction
Success hinges on thoughtful integration of Character Cards and Facilities. Cards provide specific effects tied to their Rank and Type, while Facilities offer ongoing benefits. Players experiment with synergies to handle the demands of each season and year. Zirpowers add another layer, enabling unique tactical options that can turn the tide in critical moments.
Territory expansion during the Strategy Phase directly supports point generation and card acquisition. Careful management of the three point types ensures balanced growth across commerce, industry, and culture. This system rewards foresight, as early investments shape options available in later years.
Is It Worth Playing?
PROJECT ZIRCON appeals to players who enjoy strategic deckbuilding combined with roguelike progression and nation-management challenges. The five-year structure and branching routes provide replay value through different objectives and endings. Character Card combinations and zirpower selections allow for experimentation within the core phases.
As a co-creation project still in development with a trial version underway, the game offers an evolving experience shaped by community input. Those drawn to dark fantasy settings and systems that emphasize planning across limited runs may find the mechanics engaging once the full version arrives. The emphasis on meeting yearly targets while adapting decks creates a focused survival loop suited to fans of deliberate strategy rather than fast-paced action.
