Cheat or Fold is a singleplayer indie simulation game that blends Texas Hold'em poker with programming. Players sit at virtual poker tables on a retro computer desktop while writing code to influence gameplay against computer opponents.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around observing the poker client and developing scripts that respond to game events. A purpose-built language with Python-like syntax handles automation, from basic decision making to deeper client modifications. The script editor and terminal sit alongside the poker table, allowing real-time testing through a REPL and event-driven programs.
Players manage resources on a virtual computer where CPU time, memory, and process limits apply. Credits earned in matches can purchase upgrades to support more demanding code. Debugging tools include breakpoints, variable inspection, and runtime statistics to refine strategies. Opponents display varied habits, requiring adjustments when moving between tables.
Experimentation happens safely in a sandbox mode. Built-in manuals explain the desktop, poker rules, and language features, while examples provide starting points for modification and testing. All elements remain within the simulation, with no real-world poker involvement.
Game Modes
The game operates entirely in singleplayer. Hands can be played manually, automated through scripts, or handled across multiple simulated clients. A sandbox environment supports isolated testing without affecting credits or progress. No separate competitive or multiplayer modes exist.
Programming and Strategy
Code begins small and grows into modular strategies stored in the desktop file manager. Scripts react to turns by inspecting available actions and executing decisions. As familiarity with the client increases, players can alter behavior beyond simple automation. Resource management adds another layer, as inefficient code risks hitting hardware limits during extended sessions.
The approach rewards iterative development. Failed ideas lead to investigation via terminal output and statistics, followed by refinements. Different opponent styles encourage creating adaptable or specialized scripts rather than one universal solution.
Is It Worth Playing?
Cheat or Fold suits players interested in programming challenges combined with poker mechanics. The singleplayer focus and sandbox tools support learning through direct experimentation. Those who enjoy building systems, debugging code, and optimizing within constraints will find the simulation engaging. The experience stays self-contained, with all tables, opponents, and mechanics part of the game world. Availability is limited to PC, and the design emphasizes steady progression through code improvement rather than quick sessions.
