Super Kanji Flash is an action runner that blends fast-paced platforming with kanji study on PC. Players control a customizable runner who chases ink aliens through neighborhoods across Japan while answering questions about the characters the aliens have stolen. The game supports solo play and online co-op for up to eight participants, with each player receiving questions tailored to their current progress.
Gameplay
The core loop combines running, jumping, dodging obstacles, and answering kanji questions without stopping the forward momentum. Every ink alien carries a stolen character. A question appears mid-run asking for the meaning, the reading, or the correct kanji itself. A single button press selects the answer and lets the brush strike the alien down. Correct answers chain into combos that increase the score multiplier. Missed kanji return more frequently until mastered.
Spaced repetition happens automatically through gameplay. Weak characters reappear sooner while mastered ones step aside. The run continues across themed zones that cover nature, time, the city, and the mind before moving into full JLPT N5 through N1 lists, Jōyō everyday kanji, and Kanken certification material. Hiragana and katakana practice is included from the start. A separate practice mode lets players review without the pressure of the endless run.
Boss encounters appear at the end of each zone. These bosses draw attack patterns from the specific kanji the player has missed most often. Full controller support works alongside keyboard input, and the character creator allows customization of hair, face, eyes, outfits, trails, auras, strikes, pets, and frames.
Game Modes
Defense mode requires players to hold the line against waves of Bokkyaku, the ink aliens. Raid mode focuses on bringing down a large boss before it escapes. Repaint mode tasks players with restoring an ink-drained city sign stroke by stroke. The Hub serves as a social space between runs where players can meet, show off custom looks, and emote together.
Online co-op supports up to eight players. Each participant receives questions matched to their individual learning level, so beginners and advanced learners contribute equally to the team score. Empty seats fill automatically with AI companions when needed. Every kanji reclaimed by any player during a season contributes to a shared board that unlocks seasonal cosmetics for everyone.
Progression and Content
Players begin with the first ten kanji and advance through more than 6,000 characters in total. The collection screen fills with each kanji's readings, example words, sentences, related characters, and stroke order. Over 140 stages span Japanese neighborhoods in different seasons and weather conditions, including rain, snow, and night runs. A shared seasonal board tracks collective progress across the player base.
Is It Worth Playing?
Super Kanji Flash suits anyone who wants to combine kanji study with action gameplay rather than traditional flashcards. The built-in spaced repetition and personalized question system make it practical for learners at any stage, from absolute beginners through JLPT N1 preparation. Co-op allows mixed-level groups to play together without one player carrying the others. Because the game remains in development with a planned release in Q1 2027 and currently shows no user reviews, interested players should monitor upcoming updates for final confirmation of performance and content depth. Those who enjoy endless runners and need consistent kanji practice will find the core loop directly addresses both interests through verified mechanics like mid-run questions, automatic review scheduling, and zone-based bosses.
