Tropic Storm opens a fresh front in the 1989 World War III timeline. Venezuelan protests lead to a communist coup, prompting a U.S.-led coalition with Brazil and Colombia to counter Soviet and Cuban influence. The six divisions reflect this conflict: the U.S. 4th Marine Division and 7th Infantry Division (Light) with Colombian support on one side, and the Venezuelan I and IV Divisions plus the Cuban 1a División de Tanques with Soviet Brigade elements on the other.
